Intern, Manufacturing Engineering (8 Months)

Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS-related work, Seaspan Shipyards is leading the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What you’ll do

• Focused on ship construction and manufacturing.
• support building two ships at the same time.
• Support the manufacturing processes in plasma cutting, fitting and welding, fabrication and sub assembly.
• Perform time studies, and data collection to confirm manufacturing norms.
• Calculate the workspace requirements and design strategies to utilize the workspace more effectively.
• Create standard operating procedures (SOP) and maintain manufacturing instructions used by the workforce.
• Identify waste in the manufacturing processes using lean methodologies.
• Work directly on production line with the front-line workers.
• Other duties as assigned.

What you’ll bring

• 3rd or 4th year Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering Technology Co-op Student.
• Dedication to proactive continuous improvement with an open demeanour to change is extremely important.
• Excellent problem solving & communication skills (written & spoken) are a must.
• Ability to work cross functionally as part of a team with minimal direction.
• Currently enrolled in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering program.
• Familiar with lean six sigma methodologies and concepts.
• Motivated with creative energy and initiative.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build relationship with trade workers and managers.
• Being persistent and perseverance.
• The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Must possess excellent presentation, organization and problem-solving skills.
• PC proficiency required. Solid understanding of basic Microsoft Office 2010 software suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.
