Intern, Structural Engineering (4 Months)

Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS-related work, Seaspan Shipyards is leading the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.

Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

What you’ll do

• Focused on ship design and construction
• Support providing calculation, Sketches and Drawings for Ship global Structures, Foundations and using Classification Rules.
• Perform studies and data collection for Structural Engineering when needed.
• Create standard calculation guidelines using Class Rules when needed.
• Work directly under professional Engineer and support with daily assignment
• Other duties as assigned

What you’ll bring

• Enrollment in a 2 nd year or above Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture degree program.
• Good understanding of basic Strength Calculation using First principle or Finite Element Analysis ( 2D or 3D).
• Excellent problem solving & communication skills (written & spoken) are a must.
• Ability to work cross functionally as part of a team with minimal direction.
• Currently enrolled in Mechanical or Naval Architecture program.
• Motivated with creative energy and initiative.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build relationship with other Engineering disciplines.
• Being persistent and perseverance.
• The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• good excellent presentation, organization and problem-solving skills.
• PC proficiency required. Solid understanding of basic Microsoft Office 2010 software suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint), AutoCAD. FEA software is an asset.

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.
